I usually use either the elvis or vim text editor, greatly enhanced versions of vi, featuring windows, mouse capability and many other conveniences. Both are truly excellent. Elvis' advantages are

• elvis has a customizable X11 GUI

• elvis has a very nice HTML mode, for somewhat-WYSIWYG editing of HTML files

• the elvis documentation is much cleaner, using HTML
