To those enrolled in ECS 158 or on the waiting list for it: This is a vitally important message concerning OUR TEXTBOOK. As noted in the course overview, http://heather.cs.ucdavis.edu/~matloff/158/PrequarterHeadsUp.html our textbook is the open source PDF file, http://heather.cs.ucdavis.edu/~matloff/158/PLN/ParProcBookECS158S16.pdf You are required to PRINT YOUR OWN COPY OF THIS BOOK. You are also required to BRING YOUR HARD COPY OF THE BOOK TO ALL LECTURES AND ALL DISCUSSION SECTIONS. Here is why: 1. Lectures will be out of the book. I will start each lecture with a statement like "Please turn to page 88," and then will start discussing it. Note: In almost all lectures, supplementary material will be added on the spur of the moment as new examples come to me and students ask questions. This material will often show up on exams, so it is definitely worthwhile to come to class, contrary to what you might think from the lecture format. :-) 2. Exams are OPEN BOOK, and an exam question will often have a form like "Suppose the code on page 28 were changed...How would the output change?" You really need the book! You do need a HARD COPY, and must have your own copy. (Clearly copies cannot be shared during exams.) If during lecture you prefer to view the book on a laptop, please sit near the back of the room, as it is distracting. But hard copies are needed for the quizzes. You can print your book at one of the copy shops downtown. Just bring them the PDF on a USB key. I would guess it will cost about $25, a bargain compared to, for instance, the book by Grama et al which runs about $90. Norm
